RED PLATE. ONE MATE.

New passenger limit for red P platers

The Department of Transport would appreciate the assistance of our licensing agents to raise awareness within their communities of the new law that applies to current and future red P-plate drivers in Western Australia.

From 1 December 2024, all red P-plate drivers in WA, both current and future, can drive with one passenger only. This new law will make it safer for young drivers by limiting distractions from multiple passengers in the first six months of having a provisional licence, which is the riskiest period of their driving careers.

Red P-platers driving with more than one passenger will incur a $200 fine and two demerit points.  This penalty is the same as the midnight to 5am curfew for red P-plate drivers.
